The three of us were having tea and biscuits when Hugh Tierney texted to say that he was on his way back to the causeway and ask our whereabouts. Claude replied that we were in the visitors’ center, and Hugh answered that he would join us in two shakes.

When Hugh arrived, he greeted us like long-lost friends he hadn’t seen in a decade or more. Then he settled into his tea and biscuits and asked what we thought of the Giant’s Causeway. Claude and I praised it but Julien ran away with the conversation, vividly describing every bird and plant that he’d photographed. He also surprised at least me when he mentioned that he had seen basalt columns that had four or eight sides rather than the usual six.

“ ’Tis observant you are and that will do you well. I’ve decided we’ll take the long way back to the hotel, let you see a bit of the countryside,” Hugh said.

None of us objected, but I, for one, was anxious to get back to familiar territory in the hopes I would be able to gather some information on a shipping company named Worldwide.
